Las Vegas police shot and killed two people Friday night in two separate incidents.

The first shooting happened in northwest Las Vegas, while the second happened in Chinatown.

In the first, officers responded to a report of a person with a gun at about 7:30 p.m. in the 8400 block of West Shady Shores Circle, near North Rampart Boulevard. The man went into his house, then came back out armed, police said.

The man allegedly pointed the firearm at officers. An officer shot the man. The man later died at the scene, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

No officers were injured, according to police.

In the second police shooting, a Metro SWAT officer fatally shot a man who had taken a hostage near the 6200 block of West Spring Mountain Road.

Police say the man had killed another man earlier in the day.

It began around 12:20 p.m., when a man in his 40s was fatally shot while working inside a home in the 200 block of Kipling Street, near South Jones Boulevard and West Washington Avenue.

The victim was found inside the home with a gunshot wound. He died at the scene, Metro homicide section Lt. Jason Johansson said.

Johansson said the home was being prepared to be sold. Several people related to the owners had been doing work on the house, he said.

“The victim is related to the owner of the house, and they were working on the house,” Johansson said. “We do not believe that they lived at the house.”

Johansson said the shooting appeared to be isolated and related to “something connected within this family.”

Police announced around 9:30 p.m. that a police shooting had taken place — the second of the night.

It was determined that the suspected shooter was a man, that he had taken a hostage and that he was near the 6200 block of West Spring Mountain Road, according to Johansson.

SWAT was called, and the hostage was rescued and unharmed, Johansson said.

He said a SWAT officer fired at the man as he was being taken into custody and he died at the scene. No officers were injured.

The identities of the two men killed by police hadn’t been released Saturday. As well, none of the officers had yet been identified.
