Ty Gibbs took the lead with 21 laps left and held off Las Vegan Noah Gragson by a couple of car lengths for his first NASCAR Xfinity Series title at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. ■ Hockey: NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Mitchell Miller is not eligible to play in the league, one day after the 20-year-old defenseman signed an entry-level deal with Boston. Arizona picked Miller in the 2020 draft’s fourth round, but the Coyotes relinquished his rights because he bullied a Black classmate with developmental disabilities in middle school.
■ Soccer: At Los Angeles, Gareth Bale tied the score 3-3 with a header in the eighth minute of stoppage time, backup goalkeeper John Mccarthy stopped two Philadelphia shots in the shootout, and Los Angeles FC beat the Union 3-0 on penalty kicks to win its first MLS Cup title.
