Ovechkin breaks mark for most goals with one team

WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin scored his 787th goal to break Gordie Howe’s NHL record for scoring with one team, but Arizona scored three times in the third period to rally past Washington 3-2 on Saturday.

Nick Ritchie had two goals, including the tiebreaker with 36 seconds left, and Josh Brown also scored for the Coyotes, who trailed 2-0 early in the third. Shayne Gostisbehe­re had two assists for Arizona to back Karel Vejmelka, who stopped 33 shots.

Anthony Mantha had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who gave up a lead for a fourth straight game. Darcy Kuemper had 23 saves for Washington.

With the Capitals on their third power play, Ovechkin fired a one-timer off a pass from Trevor van Riemsdyk past Vejmelka at 8:55 of the second period to open the scoring.

The goal extended Ovechkin’s point streak to five games. The 37-year-old Russian is 14 goals from tying Howe for second on the NHL’S all-time list and 107 from Wayne Gretzky’s record.

■ Jets 4, Blackhawks 0: At Winnipeg, Manitoba, Connor Hellebuyck had 30 saves in his 30th shutout and second this season as Winnipeg moved to 5-0-1 in its past six games. Josh Morrissey and Pierre-luc Dubois each had a goal and an assist.

■ Avalanche 5, Blue Jackets 1: At Tampere, Finland, Devon Toews and Martin Kaut each had a goal and an assist, and Cale Makar and Nathan Mackinnon each had three assists to back Alexandar Georgiev, who had 31 saves.

■ Maple Leafs 2, Bruins 1: At Toronto, Auston Matthews had two goals and Mitch Marner two assists as Toronto halted Boston’s seven-game win streak. Brad Marchand scored on a second-period penalty shot for the Bruins.

■ Kraken 3, Penguins 2: At Pittsburgh, Yanni Gourde set up Brandon Tanev’s tiebreakin­g goal with 3:39 left and totaled a goal and two assists as Seattle won its fourth straight and dealt Pittsburgh its seventh loss in a row.

■ Lightning 5, Sabres 3: At Tampa, Fla., Nikita Kucherov scored to extend his goal streak to six games and had three assists, and Nick Perbix scored his first NHL goal in his ninth game for Tampa Bay.

■ Red Wings 3, Islanders 0: At Detroit, Ville Husso stopped 26 shots in his fifth shutout and second this season, Dominik Kubalik had a goal and an assist, and New York’s five-game win streak ended.

■ Stars 6, Oilers 2: At Edmonton, Alberta, Jamie Benn scored three goals for his seventh hat trick, and Jason Robertson had a goal and two assists in Dallas’ third straight win.
