'Superbug' strikes
As of Oct. 24, 600 cases of Candida auris had been reported by more than 30 hospitals and skilled nursing facilities in Southern Nevada. C. auris is a drug-resistant, potentially life-threatening fungus.
The facility reporting a case may not be the location where the patient actually acquired the fungus. The first cases reported in Nevada were in August 2021.
In a colonization case, C. auris is dwelling in the folds of a person’s skin, undetectable to the eye and causing no symptoms. C. auris also can result in clinical, invasive infections, including of the blood, heart or brain.
Below are the 10 facilities reporting the highest number of cases.
