Hughes, Devils give Ruff victory No. 800 as coach

NEWARK, N.J. — Jack Hughes notched his first NHL hat trick to back Vitek Vanececk, who had 38 saves against his former team, as New Jersey beat Washington 5-1 on Saturday for coach Lindy Ruff ’s 800th victory.

Ruff became the fifth NHL coach to reach the mark. The 62-year-old former Buffalo player won 571 games with the Sabres from 1997 to 2011. He had 165 wins in five seasons with Dallas and has 64 in two-plus seasons with the Devils.

Atlantic Division-leading New Jersey (18-4-0) has won two in a row after having its franchise-record 13-game win streak snapped by Toronto.

Captain Nico Hischier and Fabian Zetterlund also scored for the Devils. John Carlson scored for the Capitals to back Charlie Lindgren, who stopped 24 shots.

■ Maple Leafs 4, Penguins 1: At Pittsburgh, Mitch Marner had a goal and an assist to extend his point streak to 16 games, backing Erik Kallgren, who had 25 saves in Toronto’s third straight win. The Leafs, who are 5-0 in the road in November, had a 41-26 edge in shots.

■ Islanders 5, Flyers 2: At New York, Brock Nelson and Anthony Beauvillie­r scored 22 seconds apart early in the third period for New York to back Semyon Varlamov, wo stopped 25 shots in the Isles’ fourth straight win. Philadelph­ia is 0-7-3 in its past 10.

■ Oilers 4, Rangers 3: At New York, defenseman Evan Bouchard scored the first two goals in Edmonton’s four-goal third period, with Leon Draisaitl capping the Oilers’ rally from a 3-0 deficit with a power-play goal with 2:02 left.

■ Hurricanes 3, Flames 2: At Raleigh, N.C., Brett Pesce’s first goal since March snapped a 2-all tie with 11:14 left, backing Antti Raanta, who had 19 saves in his first action in five games. He’d dealt with an unspecifie­d injury.

■ Blues 5, Panthers 4, OT: At Sunrise, Fla., Jordan Kyrou scored his second goal of the night 1:08 into overtime, capping St. Louis’ rally from a three-goal thirdperio­d deficit.
