Rutgers surges in second half, tops No. 10 Indiana

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Freshman Derek Simpson scored all 14 of his points in the second half, including 10 straight during Rutgers’ game-deciding run, as the Scarlet Knights beat No. 10 Indiana 63-48 on Saturday for their sixth straight win over the Hoosiers.

Caleb Mcconnell had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Rutgers (6-2, 1-0 Big Ten), which held Indiana (7-1, 0-1) to 30.4 percent shooting and a season-low point total. The Hoosiers had averaged 87.1 points per game and were coming off a win over No. 18 North Carolina.

Miller Kopp scored a season-high 21 points for Indiana, and Trayce Jacksondav­is added 13 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late. The rest of the Hoosiers totaled 14 points.

The win was coach Steve Pikiell’s 14th over a ranked team since taking over a struggling Scarlet Knights program in 2016-17.

After trailing 31-24 at intermissi­on, Indiana opened the second half with a 13-4 run. Mcconnell then hit a 3-pointer to put Rutgers ahead to stay before Simpson hit a layup, a jumper, a 3-pointer and a scoop shot that put the Hoosiers in a 47-37 hole.

The Scarlet Knights led by as many as 15, and the sellout crowd at Jersey Mike’s Arena chanted and “Overrated” in the closing minutes as Rutgers fans enjoyed their team’s ninth win in the past 10 games over Indiana.

■ No. 3 Virginia 62, Florida State 57: At Charlottes­ville, Va., Kihei Clark scored 18 points for the Cavaliers (7-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast), who won their 15th straight league opener. The Seminoles (1-9, 0-1) led 22-21 at intermissi­on before being outscored 22-9 to open the second half.

■ No. 11 Alabama 78, South Dakota State 65: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., freshman Noah Clowney had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Crimson Tide (7-1), who led 37-17 in the first half but trailed 51-50 with 11:30 left. Alabama then went on a 9-0 run, and the Jackrabbit­s (3-6) didn’t lead again.

■ No. 17 Duke 75, Boston College 59: At Durham, N.C., freshman Kyle Filipowski had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils (8-2, 1-0 ACC), who shot 52.8 percent. The Eagles (5-4, 0-1) lost their eighth straight to Duke and are 0-13 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

■ No. 25 Ohio State 96, St. Francis (Pa.) 59: At Columbus, Ohio, Brice Sensabaugh scored 15 points for the Buckeyes (6-2), who shot 50.7 percent. Josh Cohen had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Flash (2-7), who shot 55.2 percent in the first half and 26.7 percent in the second. Mountain West

■ Northern Colorado 88, Colorado State 83: At Fort Collins, Colo., Daylen Kountz scored 27 points for the Bears (4-5), who shot 57.1 percent and led 37-34 at halftime. Patrick Cartier had 23 points and Isaiah Stevens 20 for the Rams (6-3), who were outrebound­ed 35-20 and fell to 5-1 at home.

■ Boise State 86, Texas A&M 71: At Fort Worth, Texas, Max Rice scored 25 points and Marcus Shaver Jr. 20 for the Broncos (6-2), who shot 52.3 percent and had a 33-28 edge in rebounds. Wade Taylor IV had 16 points for the Aggies (53), who trailed 37-28 at halftime.

■ Portland State 68, Air Force 64: At Portland, Ore., Cameron Parker and Jorell Saterfield each scored 24 points for the Vikings (5-4), who shot 50.0 percent and led 30-29 at halftime. Rytis Petraitis had 22 points for the Falcons (5-4), who had won four straight.

■ No. 11 Arkansas 99, San Jose State 58: At Fayettevil­le, Ark., Trevon Brazile scored 23 points for the Razorbacks (7-1), who shot 62.7 percent. Omari Moore had 21 points for the Spartans (6-3), who trailed 40-35 at halftime.

■ Grand Canyon 66, Wyoming 58: At Laramie, Wyo., Rayshon Harrison scored 21 points for the Antelopes (7-2), who led 31-30 at halftime. Jake Kyman had 16 points for the Cowboys (3-5), who shot 35.0 percent.
