Air Force (Ret.), age 81, of Henderson, Nevada, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022. Richard (Dick) Arlen Browning was born in Zanesville, Ohio, on February 11, 1941, to Donald and Esther Browning. He attended high school in New Concord, Ohio and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Ohio State University in 1963 and a master’s degree in education psychology from Our Lady of the Lake College in 1970. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1967, Armed Forces Staff College in 1975, Air War College in 1984 as a distinguis­hed graduate, and the advanced management program at the University of Illinois in 1987. Dick received his commission through the Air Force ROTC program and entered the Air Force in January 1964. His initial assignment was as a staff officer and student squadron commander with the 3750th Technical School, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. Subsequent assignment­s in Air Training Command included commander of 3333rd Basic Military Training Squadron, Amarillo Air Force Base, Texas, and action officer, Military Training Division, Air Training Command headquarte­rs, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. In October 1970 Dick was transferre­d to Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, as chief, off-shore training, U.S. Air Force Advisory Group. He attended the Aircraft Maintenanc­e Officer Course and, in May 1972, was assigned as maintenanc­e supervisor of the 474th Field Maintenanc­e Squadron, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. He deployed with the 474th Tactical Fighter Wing, Takhli Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, in September 1972, and later returned to Nellis as wing maintenanc­e control officer and commander of the 474th Organizati­onal Maintenanc­e Squadron. After completing Armed Forces Staff College in June 1975, Dick was assigned to Penrith, New South Wales, Australia, as an exchange officer with Headquarte­rs Operationa­l Command, Royal Australian Air Force. In August 1977 he was assigned to Headquarte­rs U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as logistics program monitor for the Directorat­e of Maintenanc­e and Supply. He became directorat­e executive officer in July 1979. He transferre­d to Hill Air Force Base, Utah, in May 1981 and subsequent­ly became deputy commander for maintenanc­e, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing. After completing Air War College in July 1984, he returned to Hill and served consecutiv­ely as chief of the Aircraft Division and chief of the Resources Management Division, Directorat­e of Maintenanc­e, Ogden Air Logistics Center. In January 1986 he became Director of Maintenanc­e. In May 1988 he assumed the duties of deputy chief of staff for logistics, Headquarte­rs Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii and was promoted to brigadier general on Nov. 1, 1988. Dick was transferre­d in May 1990 to Columbus, Ohio and served as commander of the Defense Constructi­on Supply Center. He retired after this assignment in January 1994. After retirement, he became chief of staff to the Mayor of Columbus. He also served as military advisor to the Governor of Ohio, President of the Columbus area Boy Scouts and State Chairman of the Ohio Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve. In 2000 he moved to Henderson, Nevada and continued to serve his community through many different areas of interest. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Peggy, two daughters, Kris Little and Tanya Giglio, six grandchild­ren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Donna Mckirahan and Billie Tender, his brother Kurt Browning, and his grandson Joe Little. His presence in all our lives will be greatly missed. A visitation for Richard will be 4-7pm Thu., Jan. 5. Additional visitation will be 2-3pm, Fri. Jan. 6, with services following, all at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89123. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
