Capitals hand Bruins rare loss in regulation at home

Nicklas Backstrom and Garnet Hathaway each scored as Washington beat host Boston 2-1, sending the Nhlleading Bruins to their second regulation loss at home this season. Boston (39-8-5) is 22-2-3 at home. Its other regulation loss at TD Garden came Jan. 12 to Seattle. Alex Ovechkin was held without a point for a third straight game for the Capitals, the second time that’s happened this season.

■ Canadiens 4, Islanders 3, OT: At Montreal, Mike Hoffman’s third assist of the day came on Mike Matheson’s goal with 22 seconds left in overtime, and Montreal halted a four-game skid and improved to 1-6-1 while wearing its retro reverse light blue uniforms.

■ Wild 3, Devils 2, SO: At St. Paul, Minn., Frederick Gaudreau scored the decisive shootout goal, and Minnesota halted a three-game skid. Ex-golden Knight Tomas Tatar scored twice for New Jersey, which had won three straight and is 10-1-2 in its past 13 games.

■ Rangers 6, Hurricanes 2: At Raleigh, N.C., Artemi Panari scored four goals, three in the third period, as New York won its fifth straight and halted Carolina’s seven-game win streak. The Hurricanes had been 9-0-1 in their previous 10.

■ Lightning 3, Stars 1: At Dallas, Anthony Cirelli scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with 43 seconds left, and assisted on Brandon Hagel’s empty-netter as time expired. Tampa Bay moved to 5-11 in its past seven games.

■ Oilers 6, Senators 3: At Ottawa, Ontario, Connor Mcdavid and Zach Hyman each had a goal and an assist for Edmonton, which moved to 9-0-2 in its past 11 games and halted Ottawa’s fourgame win streak.

■ Blues 6, Coyotes 5, OT: At St. Louis, Ryan O’reilly scored 1:02 into overtime after St. Louis had blown a three-goal lead in the final 10:13 of regulation, and the Blues halted a five-game slide.

■ Predators 2, Flyers 1, OT: At Philadelph­ia, Matt Duchene scored 34 seconds into overtime in Nashville’s fourth win in five games. Philadelph­ia is 2-10 past regulation this season.

■ Avalanche 5, Panthers 3: At Sunrise, Fla., Nathan Mackinnon had two goals and an assist for Colorado, which halted Florida’s three-game win streak.
