Lockett, Toledo rocket to upset over Iowa State

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Quinesha Lockett had 24 points and 13 rebounds as Toledo beat No. 17-ranked Iowa State 80-73 on Saturday in the women’s NCAA Tournament.

The 12th-seeded Rockets (294) matched the program record for most victories for a second straight season by winning a record 17th straight game.

The fifth-seeded Cyclones (22-10), the Big 12 tournament champions, got within 78-73 on Denae Fritz’s 3-pointer with 29.4 seconds left.

■ No. 6 Connecticu­t 95, Vermont 52: At Storrs, Conn., Aaliyah Edwards scored 28 points for the second-seeded Huskies (30-5) in their 29th straight opening-round victory, which halted a 17-game win streak by the 15th-seeded Catamounts (25-7).

■ No. 12 Ohio State 80, James Madison 66: At Columbus, Ohio, Cotie Mcmahon hit the first 3-pointer for the third-seeded Buckeyes (26-7) with 5:18 left in the third quarter to put them up 44-43, and they didn’t trail again. She totaled 18 points. The 14th-seeded Dukes (26-8) led by 16 in the first half.

■ No. 20 North Carolina 61, St. John’s 59: At Columbus, Ohio, Deja Kelly converted a go-ahead three-point play with two seconds left and totaled 18 points for the sixth-seeded Tar Heels (2210). Danielle Patterson was fouled on a 3-point try in the final second but missed the first two free throws for the 11th-seeded Red Storm (23-9).

■ No. 24 Tennessee 95, Saint Louis 50: At Knoxville, Tenn., Jordan Horston scored 21 points for the fourth-seeded Lady Volunteers (24-11), who moved to 25-0 in firstround games on their home court and halted a six-game win streak by the 13th-seeded Billikens (17-18).

■ Baylor 78, Alabama 74: At Storrs, Conn., Ja’mee Asberry hit three free throws in the final minute and totaled 26 points for the seventh-seeded Bears (20-12), who closed on a 7-0 run. Brittany Davis had 33 points for the 10th-seeded Crimson Tide (20-11), who led 22-4 after one quarter and 4130 at halftime. Seattle 4

■ No. 13 Duke 89, Iona 49: At Durham, N.C., the third-seeded Blue Devils (266), who shot 57.1 percent, have won at least one NCAA Tournament game in all 25 seasons they’ve been in the field. The 14th-seeded Gaels (26-7) were outrebound­ed 43-15.

■ No. 15 Texas 79, East Carolina 40: At Austin, Texas, Brigham Young graduate transfer Shaylee Gonzales scored 20 points for the fourth-seeded Longhorns (269), who shot 54.0 percent and held the 13th-seeded Pirates (23-10) to single-digit scoring in each of the final three quarters.

■ No. 21 Colorado 82, Middle Tennessee State 60: At Durham, N.C., Frida Formann scored 21 points for the sixth-seeded Buffaloes (24-8), who hit 13 of 27 3-point tries and halted a 10-game win streak by the 11th-seeded Blue Raiders (28-5).

■ Louisville 83, Drake 81: At Austin, Texas, Hailey Van Lith scored 13 of her 26 points in the final five minutes, including five in a row in the last 16 seconds, for the fifth-seeded Cardinals (24-11), who went ahead to stay with 53 seconds left. ■ No. 2 Indiana 77, Tennessee Tech 47: At Bloomingto­n, Ind., Sydney Parrish had 19 points for the top-seeded Hoosiers (28-3), who erased a 22-20 deficit with an 8-0 run and didn’t trail again while halting an eight-game win streak by the 16th-seeded Golden Eagles (23-10).

■ No. 10 Villanova 76, Cleveland State 59: At Villanova, Pa., Maddy Siegrist had 35 points for the fourth-seeded Wildcats (29-6) while becoming the fifth women’s player to score 1,000 points in a season. When Siegrist got to 31 points, the 13th-seeded Vikings (30-5) had 32.

■ Florida Gulf Coast 74, No. 23 Washington State 63: At Villanova, Pa., Maddie Antenucci hit her first three shots — all 3-pointers in a 1:12 span, including one that bounced four times off the rim and backboard — during a tide-turning third-quarter run by the 12th-seeded Golden Eagles (33-3). The fifth-seeded Cougars (23-11) closed as 1½-point underdogs.

■ Miami 62, Oklahoma State 61: At Bloomingto­n, Ind., Haley Cavinder scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half, including the decisive free throw with 8.9 seconds left, for the ninth-seeded Hurricanes (20-12). The eighth-seeded Cowgirls (21-12) blew a 17-point halftime lead. Greenville 1

■ No. 14 UCLA 67, Sacramento State 45: At Los Angeles, Charisma Osborne had 11 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and no turnovers for the fourth-seeded Bruins (269), who held the 13th-seeded Hornets (25-8) to 34.0 percent shooting and had a 47-32 edge in rebounds.

Portland 63: At Los Angeles, the fifth-seeded Sooners (26-6) — who entered with the nation’s No. 2 offense, averaging 84.5 points per game — moved to 22-0 when scoring 80 or more points. The 12th-seeded Pilots (23-9) got within 39-36 in the third quarter.
