Gifted new life, Duvall, Boston throttle Orioles

BOSTON — Adam Duvall ended the game with his second two-run homer of the day after left fielder Ryan Mckenna dropped a routine two-out fly in the ninth inning, lifting Boston past Baltimore 9-8 on Saturday.

Duvall totaled four hits and five RBIS, finishing a single shy of the cycle. Jorge Mateo had two of the Orioles’ five stolen bases as Baltimore became the first team to steal 10 in its first two games since at least 1901.

Cedric Mullins hit a three-run homer and Ryan Mountcastl­e a two-run shot as the O’s tagged Chris Sale for seven runs over three innings in his first Fenway Park start since 2021, building a 7-1 lead.

Baltimore led 8-7 when Mckenna dropped Masataka Yoshida’s fly in the ninth. Duvall then lined hit shot just over the Green Monster off Felix Bautista (0-1).

Austin Hays went 5-for-5 with a solo homer for the Orioles, who won Thursday’s opener 10-9 after building a six-run lead.

Making his first start in Fenway since a loss in Game 5 of the 2021 American League Championsh­ip Series, Sale gave up three homers. He also had six strikeouts, getting Ramon Urias three times. Urias fanned five times in all. Kenley Jansen (1-0) got the win.

■ Giants 7, Yankees 5: At New York, San Francisco closer Camilo Doval had two of the game’s four pitch clock violations and allowed a run in the ninth before retiring Giancarlo Stanton on a game-ending double-play grounder.

■ Rangers 16, Phillies 3: At Arlington, Texas, Mitch Garver hit two three-run homers, and Texas became the seventh team since 1900 to start a season by scoring 10 or more runs in two straight games.

■ Rays 12, Tigers 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Yandy Diaz and Wander Franco each had three hits and three RBIS to back Zach Eflin (1-0), who allowed one run in five innings.

■ Cardinals 4, Blue Jays 1: At St. Louis, Jack Flaherty (1-0) issued seven walks while pitching five no-hit innings for St. Louis, which scored three unearned runs.

■ Braves 7, Nationals 1: At Washington, Matt Olson hit two of Atlanta’s four homers to back Spencer Strider (1-0), who struck out nine in six shutout innings.

■ Reds 6, Pirates 2: At Cincinnati, Jake Fraley hit a pinch three-run homer, and Kevin Newman had a two-run shot against his ex-team for Cincinnati.

■ Twins 2, Royals 0: At Kansas City, Mo., Byron Buxton had two hits and scored twice to back Sonny Gray (1-0), who pitched five shutout innings.

■ Mets 6, Marlins 2: At Miami, Pete Alonso hit a go-ahead RBI double in the fifth to back Tylor Megill (1-0), who struck out seven in five innings.

■ Astros 6, White Sox 4: At Houston, Kyle Tucker had two RBI singles, including the go-ahead hit in the seventh, for Houston.

■ Angels 13, Athletics 1: At Oakland, Calif., Taylor Ward hit an RBI single and a two-run homer in Los Angeles’ 11-run third.

■ Brewers 3, Cubs 1: At Chicago, William Contreras hit a tiebreakin­g two-run single in Milwaukee’s three-run eighth.

■ Aces 15, Aviators 10: At Reno, Emmanuel Rivera had a three-run triple and a sacrifice fly for Reno (2-0), which led 11-0 after four innings. Phillip Evans went 3-for-4, drove in two runs and scored four for the Aces, who had a 16-10 edge in hits. Kevin Smith hit a three-run homer, one of six extrabase hits by the Aviators (0-2).
