Kreider, Rangers throttle Bruins in East showdown

Chris Kreider scored twice to back former Golden Knight Jonathan Quick, who had 27 saves, as the host New York Rangers beat Boston 7-4 on Saturday in a matchup of the Eastern Conference’s top two teams.

Jimmy Vesey scored the go-ahead goal on a delayed penalty with 3:23 left in the second period for the Rangers (15-3-1), who won their third straight and seventh in eight games. They are 13-1-1 in their past 15 and have 15 wins in 19 or fewer games for the first time.

Charlie Coyle scored twice for the Bruins (14-3-3), who have lost two straight and three of their past four.

Quick continued his stellar start with New York, improving to 6-0-1. The 37-year-old signed as a free agent last summer after finishing last season with the Knights.

■ Flyers 1, Islanders 0, SO: At New York, rookie Tyson Foerster scored the lone goal to cap a four-round shootout, and Samuel Ersson stopped 25 shots through overtime and four shootout tries in his second shutout and first this season. Ilya Sorokin had 40 saves for New York, which had won three in a row.

■ Penguins 3, Maple Leafs 2: At Pittsburgh, defenseman Erik Karlsson scored the decisive goal with 27.9 seconds left in the second period for Pittsburgh, which halted a two-game skid. Toronto lost in regulation for the first time in six games.

■ Devils 7, Sabres 2: At Newark, N.J., Tyler Toffoli scored twice for New Jersey, which had a 38-12 edge in shots and halted a three-game skid with its first home win since Oct. 29. Buffalo has alternated wins and losses for its past five games.

■ Kings 4, Canadiens 0: At Los Angeles, Trevor Moore scored twice, Pheonix Copley stopped 18 shots in his third shutout and first this season, and Los Angeles (13-3-3) won its fifth straight and ninth in 11 games. AHL

■ Roadrunner­s 3, Silver Knights 2: At Dollar Loan Center, Josh Doan scored the go-ahead goal 7:51 into the third period and had an assist for Tucson (9-6-1), which had a 33-30 edge in shots. Brendan Brisson and Grigori Denisenko scored in the second period for the Silver Knights (9-6-2) to forge a 2-all tie.
