Sporting News announces plan to become online-only

The publisher and editor-in-chief of Sporting News said the magazine will become online-only at the start of 2013. The magazine began in 1886 and has printed either weekly, biweekly or monthly editions since its inception.

In a letter to readers, publisher Jeff Price and editor-in-chief Garry Howard said “neither our subscriber base nor the current advertisin­g market for print would allow us to operate a profitable print business going forward.”

Also: The PGA of America is bringing a mystery guest to the “Today” show — its next Ryder Cup captain. Golf Digest reported on its website that it would be Tom Watson.

The PGA said it would reveal the next U.S. captain during a Thursday segment of NBC’s morning show, followed by a news conference in the Empire State Building. NBC is the longtime broadcast partner of the Ryder Cup.

The Wranglers let a 2-0 lead slip away, losing to the Colorado Eagles 3-2 in overtime at Loveland, Colo.

Colorado (11-10-3) ended it quickly in the extra period, with Jack Combs scoring just 22 seconds in to complete the rally. Las Vegas (8-10-4) led 20 heading into the third period, on Sean Wiles’ first-period goal and Josh Godfrey’s second-period score.

Men’s tennis star Rafael Nadal is ready to return to tennis, confirming that he’ll play in an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, at the end of the month following a six-month break to recover from a knee injury.
