David Ortiz became the third player in Boston Red Sox history to hit 400 home runs with the team on Saturday.

Ortiz connected in the third inning against Houston, sending a solo drive into the first row of the center-field seats at Fenway Park for the milestone shot. He added a two-run homer in the fifth.

Ortiz has 459 home runs in his career, which started with the Minnesota Twins.

Big Papi joins Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski as the only players to hit 400 homers while playing in a Red Sox uniform. Williams hit 521 and Yaz 452.

Paul Konerko of the White Sox is the lone other active player with 400 homers for one team. He has 432 with Chicago.

■ YANKEES — Ace Masahiro Tanaka threw 25 pitches in his first bullpen session in a month since going on the disabled list with a partial tear in his right elbow.

Tanaka, 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts, pitched from the mound before Saturday’s game against Tampa Bay.

Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Tanaka looked “fine,” but that it’s “more important how he feels tomorrow.”

The Yankees put Tanaka on the disabled list July 9 and hope he can avoid surgery and return next month.

■ CARDINALS — Willie McGee, Jim Edmonds, Mike Shannon and the late Marty Marion were inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals’ Hall of Fame.

NOTES

The four players represent the initial group to be selected for induction by a voting process that included input from fans and a panel of baseball experts.

St. Louis opened its Hall of Fame and Museum in April, and the first 22 players to be enshrined earned automatic entry because they were in the National Baseball Hall of Fame as Cardinals or had their number retired by the club.

■ MINOSO HOSPITALIZED — Former White Sox legend Minnie Minoso was hospitalized in Chicago after falling from his boat.

Team spokesman Scott Reifert told WMAQ-TV the 88-year-old was pulled from the water Friday and taken to St. Joseph Hospital for tests.

Team representatives spoke with Minoso, and the baseball great reportedly said he is “feeling fine.”
