Grant will help study use of private money for education

The city of Las Vegas will use a nearly $100,000 grant to identify whether private-sector interests could fund early childhood education and developmen­t programs for at-risk children.

The Policy Innovation Lab, an academic organizati­on housed at the University of Utah, announced the grant Wednesday as part of six projects that will provide city, county and state government­s with the funds to develop social interventi­on programs in their communitie­s.

With its award, the city will work with the state, county and local nonprofit organizati­on Children’s Advocacy Alliance to conduct a feasibilit­y study to find service providers to help increase kindergart­en readiness, improve thirdgrade literacy and reduce the need for special education, according to a news release.

The full $76,780 grant will fund additional staffing, technical support and other needs, the release reads. Friday, according to Las Vegas police.

The shooting happened about 3:15 a.m. close to Maryland Parkway and Del Mar Street, near Harmon Avenue, during what police said was a possible attempted robbery.

There was a struggle, and the woman was shot. She was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

Police describe the shooter as a black female in her late teens to early 20s, standing about 5-feet-6-inches tall with a medium build and wearing a pink hooded sweatshirt and jeans. Rock Search and Rescue near Deer Creek Road, just 2 miles north of Kyle Canyon Road, about 12:30 p.m. April 4, Las Vegas police said.

North Las Vegas police said Parkhurst’s wife filed a missing person’s report. Search and rescue volunteers started the search April 3.

He was a member of the 432nd wing at Creech in Indian Springs, spokesman Sgt. Shad Eidson said.

During his career, Parkhurst was also a helicopter maintainer and food service specialist, Barclay said, who was given multiple awards, including the Air Force Achievemen­t and the Meritoriou­s Service medals.

Security about 11:15 p.m. saw two people possibly “casing the area” of the parking garage, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Metro spokesman Michael Rodriguez said Friday.

Security recognized them as possibly being involved in prior thefts at the resort and approached them, Rodriguez said. The people were not cooperativ­e and tried to leave.

At that point, security felt “fearful” and fired a round into a vehicle’s windshield, Rodriguez said. The people stopped, got out of the vehicle, were detained by security and arrested by Las Vegas police.
