Windy weekend forecast for Las Vegas

Gusts could reach 40 mph today, lighter winds Sunday

Another round of winds expected in the Las Vegas Valley for the weekend prompted a caution notice to construction workers by the Clark County Department of Air Quality.

The department asked dust control permit holders, contractors and stationary sources to use best available control measures to stabilize all disturbed soils.

If gusts reach as high as expected, which is more than the advised 25 mph limit for dust control permittees, project operators should not load blasting material or perform any blasting operations, the department said.

Though winds peaked at 37 mph at McCarran International Airport, the National Weather Service said, they did not receive reports of any damage.

A “band of clouds” lingering in the valley made isolated showers a possibility for late Friday night, weather service meteorologist Chris Outer said. The better possibility, however, will occur between 5 and 10 p.m. today when a “strong storm” is expected to move through the valley.

Thunderstorms also are expected through a breezy and partly sunny day today, and winds will pick up a few notches around the valley, according to the weather service meteorologist Andrew Gorelow.

Winds are normal for this time of year in Las Vegas, Gorelow said.

Stronger winds are expected today with speeds of 20 to 30 mph that will slow to 7 to 12 mph later in the evening. Gusts could reach as high as 40 mph, he said.

Temperatures Friday reached a high of 77 degrees and a low of 59 degrees, Outer said.

A cold front will come through this evening and last into the morning, dropping evening temperatures to 59 degrees from a high of 73.

The weekend will end on a breezy note, with a high of 76 degrees and a low of 59 degrees. Sunday morning will be cool with northwest winds blowing as fast as 22 mph and gusts as high as 33 mph.
