GREENFest celebration to be held today
The Green Alliance/Nevada Energy Star Partners will hold their annual GREENFest 2015 celebration at Downtown Summerlin from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, www.thinkenergystar.com/GREENFest.
The event will host more than 120 exhibitors who will be presenting practical solutions for sustainable living that include green building practices, smart energy usage, efficient appliances, water conservation, recycling, how to harvest the power of the sun, grow your own food, care for your pet, and use cleaner fuels for transportation.
Admission is free to the general public.
Fun events for the whole family will include live music, interactive art, a Kids Zone, a recyclable fashion show, and even a Beer Garden for adults to sample locally-brewed beverages.
To jumpstart the GREENFest 2015 event, eco-friendly vehicles will stage a procession from 9 to 10 a.m. that will begin at Las Vegas Cyclery on 10575 Discovery Drive, near the corner of Flamingo Road and Town Center Drive.
A caravan of clean-energy vehicles will wind through the Summerlin community and arrive at the Downtown Summerlin retail and business district by 10 a.m.
Vehicles participating in the procession will be powered by electricity, compressed natural gas, biodiesel, ethanol, human pedal power, and other hybrid fuels.
Drive Clean Energy Las Vegas is a program that was first initiated by Green Alliance/Nevada Energy Star Partners in 2013, led by NV Energy, Southwest Gas, MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment, and Verdek, LLC.
The annual GreenFest celebration commemorates Earth Day and was first started in 2010 by Tracy Skenandore of Republic Services and Annette Bubak of Green Alliance/Nevada Energy Star Partners, with support from Trina Johnson of Trina Johnson Events
At that time, Republic Services had acquired Evergreen Recycling, a company originally founded by Rob Dorinson, who vigorously led community efforts in southern Nevada to encourage material re-use and sustainable living practices. Dorinson died in 2013 from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, a motor-neuron disease.
Since his passing, the GreenFest celebration has recognized his community contributions through a Rob Dorinson Environmental Hero Award each year.
