Ferguson, popular soaps capture Emmys

Comedian wins for game show; White recognized

LOS ANGELES — In a surprising twist, both “Days of Our Lives” and “The Young and the Restless” took home the top soap prize at Sunday’s Daytime Emmys.

The two popular shows tied to win outstanding drama series. Other top winners include “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” winning the talk show/entertainment category again, along with Craig Ferguson for best game show host and Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan for best talk show hosts/entertainment.

Also, veteran actress Betty White was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences found a new broadcasting home on the pop cable channel, which aired the event live, as opposed to last year’s webcast-only show. Tyra Banks hosted.

Ferguson took home the game show host win for his syndicated “Celebrity Name Game” series. When asked what fuels his success, his self-deprecating side took over: “I think I’m a panicky person that seeks approval,” Ferguson said.

He added that he was grateful for the award, which he took as a vote of confidence in his future after signing off from CBS’ “Late Late Show” in December.

“There comes a point where you have to move on and do something else, and that’s why I’m so excited about getting this,” he said. “It makes me feel encouraged. There may be a future for me.” Here is the full list of winners: Outstanding drama series: “Days of Our Lives” (NBC) and “The Young and the Restless” (CBS)
