Henderson getting new overpass
Project to improve area at Stephanie Street, U.S. 95
A new overpass of U.S. Highway 95 at Stephanie Street paralleling an existing bridge will increase capacity and improve safety for a rapidly growing part of Henderson.
Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen and members of the City Council participated in a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday morning that kicks off the $18.5 million project that also includes the extension of Stufflebeam Avenue to Stephanie and the construction of separate bicycle paths along that route.
Construction work begins June 15, and the project is expected to be completed by March.
“This project is not only good for all of the motorists who drive on Stephanie Street but also the pedestrians and bicyclists,” Henderson Councilwoman Debra March, vice chairwoman of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, said at Tuesday’s event.
“In addition to improving our roadways, this project will create an estimated 188 jobs to help fuel our economy,” March said.
The project is being paid for primarily with fuel-revenue indexing funds raised in an augmented fuel tax. It’s one of more than 200 road and transportation projects funded by the three-year indexing program. The new bridge will supplement an existing two-lane overpass by adding two more lanes as well as bicycle paths over the busy freeway.
The improvements are occurring in the area near the under-construction Union Village health care campus being built by the Valley Health System.
The Stufflebeam extension will include a landscaped trail with a pedestrian roadway undercrossing. It’s near the huge Central Christian Church and the Russell Road Recreation Complex.
Both Stephanie and Stufflebeam will include bike lanes that will be slightly elevated from the street surface to separate cyclists and motorists.
Other parts of the project include the widening of Stephanie from Galleria Drive to Russell; the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Stephanie and Patrick Lane; and general road improvements to Stufflebeam.
The Stephanie Street Roadway and Bridge project also includes $2.3 million in flood control improvements funded by the Clark County Regional Flood Control District. Improvements include concrete-lined channel modifications and culverts crossing U.S. 95. Work is scheduled to begin next week and is estimated to be completed by March. Contact Richard N.
