Mariners get Trumbo in trade with D-Backs
The Seattle Mariners swung a significant six-player trade on Wednesday, acquiring infielder-outfielder Mark Trumbo and left-hander Vidal Nuno from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for catcher Wellington Castillo, right-hander Dominic Leone and two minor-leaguers.
The 29-year-old Trumbo was batting .259 with nine home runs and 23 RBIs in 46 games this season for the Diamondbacks, starting 40 games in right field and one at first base. In six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels and Diamondbacks, the former American League All-Star has 118 home runs and 368 RBIs in 594 games. He had 34 homers and 100 RBIs in his final season for the Angels, in 2013.
Nuno, 27, pitched in relief three times for the Diamondbacks this season and was 0-1 with a 1.88 ERA. In eight Triple-A starts for Reno, he went 3-3 with a 3.38 ERA.
Castillo, 28, was acquired from the Chicago Cubs on May 19 in exchange for right-hander Yoervis Medina and played in six games for the Mariners. Leone, 23, was
NOTES 0-4 with a 6.35 ERA in 10 relief outings with Seattle this year.
Included in the deal were minor-league outfielder Gabby Guerrero and infielder Jack Reinheimer.
■ YANKEES — New York righthander Masahiro Tanaka was activated from the 15-day disabled list to start against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
Tanaka, working his way back from right wrist tendinitis and a strained forearm, threw 78 pitches in seven innings, struck out nine and allowed just one run and three hits in the Yankees’ 3-1 victory.
■ ROCKIES — Right-hander Jordan Lyles will undergo season-ending toe surgery next week.
Lyle will have his medial collateral ligament and capsule in his left big toe repaired.
“It’s essentially Tommy John for my toe,” Lyles said, according to The Denver Post.
Lyles, 24, sprained the toe on May 23 and aggravated the injury Sunday in Philadelphia. The Rockies placed him on the 15-day disabled list Monday, and he saw a specialist Tuesday.
Lyles finished the season with a 2-5 record and 5.14 ERA.
■ CUBS — Right fielder Jorge Soler was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ankle and replaced on the roster by outfielder Mike Baxter.
Soler injured the ankle Monday when he stepped on first base awkwardly while running out a grounder in the fifth inning against the Marlins in Miami. He’s expected to be out about six weeks.
Soler is hitting .265 with four home runs and 19 RBIs in 49 games this year.
■ ATHLETICS — Oakland activated left-hander Drew Pomeranz from the 15-day disabled list after suffering with a sprained left AC joint.
Also, left fielder Coco Crisp, on the DL since May 20 with a cervical strain, received an epidural and returned to the Bay Area.
■ BREWERS — Outfielder Ryan Braun is not expected to play for several days after receiving a cryotherapy shot in his right thumb.
Braun has had the same procedure in the past with the intent of reducing discomfort. Braun has 12 home runs in his first 51 games this season.
