Van Pelt, Matsuyama lead Memorial with opening 64s; Woods nine back

-

Bo Van Pelt and Hideki Matsuyama shot 8-under-par 64s to open a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.

Van Pelt and Matsuyama, the defending champion who had four straight birdies on the back nine, were among the afternoon starters that charged to the top of the leaderboard in Jack Nicklaus’ annual PGA Tour event at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Jason Duffner and Russell Knox also had later tee times and were next at 66. Dufner had a share of the lead until he finished with a double bogey on the 18th hole.

Masters champion Jordan Spieth missed his first two greens before finding his groove to take an early share of the lead at 5 under before falling one shot back with a bogey on the par-5, 563-yard seventh hole and finishing with a 68.

Tiger Woods shot 73 after a disastrous front nine. He had four bogeys and a double bogey on the front, when he hit just two fairways and came in at 40 before beginning his back nine on the first hole.

Also: Cheyenne Woods, the niece of 14-time majors winner Tiger Woods, upstaged the game’s biggest names by birdieing five of her last nine holes to share the first-round lead at the LPGA Manulife Classic in Cambridge, Ontario.

The 24-year-old American, playing her first full season on the LPGA Tour, birdied the 10th, 11th, 12th, 16th and 17th holes to set the early tournament pace with a course-record 9-underpar 63 at Whistle Bear Golf Club.

Later in the day, Cheyenne was caught at the top by seasoned American Cristie Kerr, who finished with four consecutive birdies, and Thailand’s PK Kongkraphan.
