FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 opens with host Canada playing China

Host Canada and China will meet in the first match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 today in Group A play at Commonweal­th Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta.

In the day’s second Group A match, also in Edmonton, New Zealand will play the Netherland­s.

The internatio­nal soccer tournament features 24 nations divided into six groups of four for stage play, which runs through June 17. The U.S. is in Group D, along with Australia, Nigeria and Sweden.

The Americans’ first match is Monday night against Australia at Winnipeg Stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

After stage play, Round of 16 play and the semifinals, a champion will be crowned July 5 at Vancouver’s B.C. Place.

Also: Baltimore Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz began serving an eight-game suspension after losing an appeal to Major League Baseball.

Matusz was caught with an illegal substance on his right arm while pitching in a May 23 game against the Miami Marlins.

The Orioles also welcomed back catcher Matt Wieters, who missed more than a year after Tommy John elbow surgery. He was activated from the 60-day disabled list and started against Cleveland, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in a 5-2 win.

Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Will Smith’s suspension for having an illegal substance on his right arm was reduced from eight games to six games. Like Matusz, his appeal was heard Monday, and a decision was rendered Friday.

Matt Crafton, the two-time and reigning NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion, beat Daniel Suarez by 0.569 seconds to win the WinStar World Casino & Resort 400 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.

Crafton survived two late-race cautions and restarts against Suarez, including one with two laps left, to record his eighth career win.

Dan Henderson will look to end a two-fight losing streak when he meets Tim Boetsch in a middleweig­ht bout in the main event of an Ultimate Fighting Championsh­ip card tonight in New Orleans.

Also on the card, heavyweigh­t Matt Mitrione will fight Ben Rothwell. Mitrione has won three consecutiv­e fights by first-round knockout.

The card airs live on Fox Sports 1 (Cable 329), with the preliminar­y card starting at 5 p.m. and the main card at 7.
