Fitzpatrick, Jets agree to one-year deal

-

A person familiar with the negotiations says the New York Jets have re-signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to a oneyear deal worth $12 million, ending months of speculation and uncertainty surrounding the team’s quarterback spot.

Fitzpatrick set the franchise record with a career-high 31 touchdown passes last season while helping lead the Jets on a playoff push in Todd Bowles’ first season as coach.

The deal was reached Wednesday night, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the signing. NFL NOTES

The well-traveled 33-year-old veteran appeared to be a certainty to resign in the weeks leading to the start of free agency, but Fitzpatrick and the Jets became locked in a contract stalemate over financial terms.

RAMS — Los Angeles released quarterback Nick Foles after failing to find a trade destination for the disgruntled veteran.

The Rams announced the move one day before their veterans report to training camp for their homecoming season in Southern California.

Foles hasn’t been around the Rams since they traded up to choose California quarterback Jared Goff with the No. 1 pick in the draft this spring. The veteran skipped offseason workouts while Los Angeles attempted to trade him. Instead, the Rams had to release a capable veteran quarterback without compensation after teams likely realized they could attempt to sign Foles as a free agent.

PATRIOTS — New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick acknowledged that Jimmy Garoppolo will have to start the first four games of the season at quarterback and said the top priority of training camp would be to get the former backup ready.

“We have finally some definition with Tom’s situation,” Belichick said of Tom Brady before declining to comment further on the “Deflategate” scandal that engulfed the NFL and one of its most successful franchises for 18 months.

“Tom will return as the starting quarterback when he comes back, but in the meantime we have to prioritize the first part of our schedule and that’ll be to get Jimmy ready to go.”

Brady was suspended four games and the team was docked $1 million and two draft picks for what the league said was a scheme to illegally deflate the footballs used in the 2015 AFC championship game.

COWBOYS — Defensive end Randy Gregory is facing a longer suspension over another violation of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, and owner Jerry Jones says he doesn’t expect to see the troubled player at training camp in California.

With Gregory already suspended for the first four games this season, Jones said that the Cowboys haven’t heard from the league about a possible 10-game ban for another failed drug test.

A day after reports that Gregory was in rehab, Jones acknowledged that the former Nebraska standout was undergoing treatment.

SAINTS — Veteran wide receiver Hakeem Nicks will sign a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints, according to multiple reports.

Nicks will become the oldest member of the Saints’ wideouts after fellow veteran receiver Vincent Brown was placed on injured reserve earlier this week.

PANTHERS — Safety Kurt Coleman signed a three-year contract extension with the Carolina Panthers. NFL Network reported the contract was worth $17 million, including $7 million guaranteed and $6 million up front.

VIKINGS — Veteran defensive tackle Kevin Williams signed a oneday contract with the Minnesota Vikings and is expected to formally announce his retirement the following day.

Williams started 171 games over 11 seasons with Minnesota, earning six Pro Bowl selections to tie him with John Randle for second in team history behind Alan Page. He recorded 60 of his 63 career sacks with the Vikings.
