■ Tigers 9-4, Twins 2-2 — At Minneapoli­s, Justin Verlander (15-8) held Minnesota to two runs and struck out 11 in six innings as Detroit capped a doublehead­er sweep and moved into the second AL wild-card spot. Victor Martinez had a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the Tigers’ six-run ninth in the opener. Detroit, which went 9-0 against the Twins this season, moved a half-game ahead of Baltimore for the second wild card and trails Toronto by one game.

■ Red Sox 5, Orioles 3 — At Baltimore, Hanley Ramirez homered to back David Price (17-8), who won his eighth straight decision, as Boston capped its first four-game sweep in Baltimore since 2002. The Red Sox have won eight straight to open a 5½-game lead over Toronto in the AL East and move within one game of Texas of the AL’s best record. The Orioles fell seven games out and dropped 1½ games behind the Blue Jays for the top AL wild card.

■ Angels 2, Astros 0 — At Houston, Albert Pujols hit a tworun homer in the first inning off Mike Fiers (11-8), and Ricky Nolasco (7-14) blanked Houston on five singles over seven innings. Jose Altuve had three hits for the Astros, who fell 1½ games behind Detroit for the second AL wild card. Fiers gave up four hits and struck out a season-high nine in 6 1/3 innings.

■ Indians 5, Royals 2 — At Cleveland, Carlos Santana hit a tiebreakin­g three-run homer in the sixth inning off Dillon Gee (7-9) as AL Central-leading Cleveland improved to 9-1 against Kansas City this season. Jason Kipnis also homered for the Indians, who can wrap up a postseason berth this weekend against the White Sox.

■ Rays 2, Yankees 0 — At St. Petersburg, Fla., Blake Snell (6-8) and Tampa Bay’s bullpen combined to strand 11 New York runners as the Yankees went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Snell gave up five hits and three walks in five innings. Brad Miller hit an RBI single in the first inning, and Corey Dickerson homered in the sixth. Samardzija (12-10), who shut out San Diego on four hits and no walks and struck out nine in seven innings, as San Francisco kept pace with the Mets atop the NL wild-card standings. The Giants and New York are a half-game ahead of St. Louis. Hunter Pence’s two-out RBI double in the eight put San Francisco up 2-0.

■ Brewers 3, Pirates 1 — At Milwaukee, Sierra Vista product Chris Carter hit his 37th home run, matching his career high, matched his career best with his 88th RBI, and struck out twice to raise his NL-leading total to 196 for Milwaukee. Scooter Gennett sliced an opposite-field, two-run homer in the first inning for the Brewers, who had lost six straight home games to Pittsburgh.

■ Braves 6, Marlins 3 — At Miami, Matt Kemp hit two home runs, giving him 33 this season, to back Josh Collmenter (3-0), who held Miami to two runs in seven innings, as Atlanta won its sixth straight. Freddie Freeman singled in the third to extend his hitting streak to 26 games, the majors’ longest active streak, and drove in two runs for the Braves.
