Red Wings out of playoffs for first time since 1990 with loss

RALEIGH, N.C. — Lee Stempniak and Joakim Nordstrom scored about five minutes apart in the first period, and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Detroit RedWings 4-1 Tuesday night in the teams’ second meeting in two nights.

Detroit’s loss eliminated it from playoff contention, ending the Red Wings’ run of 25 consecutiv­e postseason appearance­s — tied for the third-longest such streak in NHL history.

■ Oilers 2, Kings 1 — At Edmonton, Alberta, Cam Talbot made 34 saves as Edmonton officially earned a playoff spot for the first time in 11 years. Connor McDavid and Eric Gryba scored for the Oilers, who have won seven of their last eight games.

■ Capitals 5, Wild 4, OT — At St. Paul, Minn., T.J. Oshie scored his second goal of the game 1:42 into overtime to bookend Alex Ovechkin’s hat trick, Braden Holtby earned his 40th win and NHL-leading Washington earned its fifth straight victory.

■ Maple Leafs 3, Panthers 2 — At Toronto, Auston Matthews broke Wendel Clark’s 31-year-old franchise rookie record with his 35th goal of the season, and Toronto stayed one point ahead of Boston for the third playoff spot in the Atlantic Division.

■ Jets 4, Devils 3, SO — At Newark, N.J., Patrik Laine scored in a shootout and Winnipeg rallied from a two-goal deficit to sweep its season series with New Jersey. Connor Hellebuyck made 20 saves for the Jets. NHL

■ Blue Jackets 3, Sabres 1 — At Columbus, Ohio, Cam Atkinson got his team-leading 34th goal and Sergei Bobrovsky had 41 saves to help Columbus improve to 7-2-1 in its last 10 games.

■ Bruins 4, Predators 1 — At Boston, Tuukka Rask made 24 saves in his return from a one-game absence and Boston boosted its playoff chances. Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, Noel Acciari and David Backes scored for the Bruins.

■ Flyers 3, Senators 2, SO — At Philadelph­ia, Jordan Weal scored the only shootout goal after tying the game late in the third period to lift Philadelph­ia, a long shot to make the playoffs, to a win.

■ Canadiens 4, Stars 1 — At Montreal, Brendan Gallagher put Montreal ahead early in the third period and the Canadiens beat Dallas in the Stars first game since learning they had been eliminated from playoff contention.

■ Ducks 4, Canucks 1 — At Vancouver, British Columbia, Corey Perry, Patrick Eaves and Nick Ritchie scored in the first period and Anaheim won its fifth straight. The Ducks clinched their spot in the playoffs earlier in the day.

■ Sharks 5, Rangers 4, OT — At San Jose, Calif., Brent Burns scored a power-play goal 3:10 into overtime and San Jose ended a six-game losing streak. New York, by earning a point, still clinched a playoff berth.
