Orioles’ Hardy activated off DL

Baltimore Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy, out nearly three months with a broken right wrist, was activated from the 60-day disabled list.

Hardy was hit by a pitch on June 18 and placed on the DL the following day. He is batting .211 with three home runs and 21 RBIS in 64 games and recently completed a minor league rehabilita­tion assignment.

Tim Beckham, acquired from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline, has taken over the Orioles’ shortstop duties. He entered Friday batting .359 with seven homers and 20 RBIS since the trade.

Left-hander Andrew Faulkner, who had been pitching at Triple-a

Norfolk, was designated for assignment.

■ Tigers: Nicholas Castellano­s, normally Detroit’s everyday third baseman, started in right field for the first time as a major leaguer to make room for rookie Jeimer Candelario at third. Castellano­s made 51 starts in right at Double-a Erie in 2012, and left field was his regular position in 2013 at Triple-a Toledo and in his brief time in the majors that season.

* Cardinals: Durango product Tommy Pham

(sore right shoulder) returned to St. Louis’ lineup in center field, his first start since Monday. Corner infielder Matt Carpenter (right shoulder tendinitis) returned after missing six of the past seven games, but second baseman Kolten Wong (tight back), who hasn’t played since Sunday, remained sidelined.

■ Royals: Right-hander Kelvin Herrera (right forearm strain) will be given a break from serving as Kansas City’s closer, manager Ned Yost said, with left-handers Scott Alexander and Mike Minor and right-hander Brandon Maurer filling in at closer.

■ Phillies: Rookie right-handed reliever Jesen Therrien was diagnosed with damage to his right ulnar collateral ligament and ruled out for the rest of the season.

■ Pirates: Utility player Adam Frazier (right hamstring strain) and outfielder Gregory Polanco (left hamstring strain) were activated from the disabled list.

■ Giants: Right-handed reliever Mark Melancon will undergo season-ending elbow surgery Tuesday, with an expected recovery time of two to three months.

■ Dodgers: Shortstop Corey Seager (sore right elbow) returned to Los Angeles’ starting lineup after not starting for the past 10 games.

■ Marlins: First baseman Justini Bour

(right oblique strain), who had been sidelined since late July, was activated from the disabled list.

■ Diamondbac­ks: First baseman Paul Goldschmid­t (sore right elbow) remained out of Arizona’s lineup for a fifth straight game.

■ White Sox: The contracts of righthande­rs Chris Volstad and Al Albuquerqu­e were purchased from Triple-a Charlotte.

■ Astros: Righthande­d reliever Michael Feliz (sore right shoulder) was activated from the disabled list.

■ Braves: Catcher

Tyler Flowers (left wrist contusion) was activated from the disabled list.

■ Angels: Outfielder Shane Robinson’s contract was purchased from Triple-a Salt Lake.

■ Rangers: First baseman/outfielder Ryan Rua was recalled from Triple-a Round Rock.

■ Blue Jays: Righthande­d reliever Leonel Campos was recalled from Triple-a Buffalo.
