Men’s golf team four shots off pace in season opener

Justin Kim shot a 3-under-par 69, two strokes off the pace, en route to helping the 12th-ranked UNLV men’s golf team sit in fifth place Friday after one round of the season-opening, 19-team Gene Miranda Falcon Invitation­al in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Kim, a sophomore, who had six birdies, is sixth individual­ly. Junior teammate Harry Hall is tied for seventh at 2-under 70 in the 111-player event.

Colorado State leads the field by two strokes at 6-under 282. Colorado and W yoming are tied for second, followed by Texas-el Paso (285) and UNLV (286).

■ Women’s soccer: Atflagstaf­f,

Ariz., Amanda Galbraith scored her third goal of the season in the 107th minute to send the Rebels to a 2-1 overtime win over Northern Arizona (4-2). UNLV, off to its first 6-1 start in program history, went ahead on Michaela Morris’ fourth goal of the season in the 47th minute. Adrian Nixt scored for the Lumberjack­s on a header with 35 seconds left in regulation.

■ Volleyball: At Cox Pavilion, Mariena Hayden had 16 kills and 19 digs to lead the Rebels (4-5) to a 3-2 win over W eber State (1-6) in the UNLV Challenge. UNLV won by scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 15-8. In the Rebels’ second match, Hayden had 18 kills in a 3-2 loss to UC Irvine (7-1) by scores of 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12. ■ Jaguars: Jacksonvil­le claimed safety Calvin Pryor off waivers from Cleveland and placed rookie wide receiver Dede W estbrook (core muscle injury) on injured reserve.

■ Saints: Long snapper Jon Dorenbos will require open-heart surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm that was discovered in a physical after his trade from Philadelph­ia.

■ Giants: The status of wide receiver Odell Beckham (ankle), who hasn’t practiced this week, likely will be a game-time decision Sunday at Dallas.

■ Browns: Kevin Hogan was named Cleveland’s backup quarterbac­k to rookie Deshone Kizer for Cleveland’s opener against Pittsburgh.

■ Patriots: Linebacker Kyle Van Noy, 26, a Brigham Young product, agreed to a two-year extension with New England.
