Men’s golf senior Ban ties for first at Alabama event

UNLV senior Shintaro Ban shot a final-round-low 7-under-par 63 to tie for individual medalist honors Tuesday at the Jerry Pate National Intercolle­giate, which was played at Old Overton Golf Club (par 70, 7,204 yards) in Vestavia Hills, Ala.

The tournament title is the second of Ban’s career as he also tied for first individual­ly at the Robert Kepler Invitation­al in 2016.

Alabama won the Jerry Pate team title by six strokes (-19), marking the ninth time in the last 12 years that the Crimson Tide won as the host. The Rebels finished sixth as a team at 7-over.

Women’s golf: UNLV carded a three-round score of 35-over 899 to finish fifth at the Betsy Rawls Invitation­al at the University of Texas Golf Club. In just her second collegiate tournament, freshman Polly Mack registered her first top-10 finish, carding a 2-over 218 to place tied for sixth.

Volleyball: UNLV libero Leka KinerFalef­a was named the Mountain West’s Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in a pair of come-from-behind, five-set victories for the week ending on October 7.

The sophomore from Honolulu contribute­d 54 digs between the wins over San Jose State and UNR with an average of 5.40 digs per set.

Men’s soccer: UNLV senior forward Danny Musovski was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks.

Musovski, a Las Vegas native, posted three goals in the first 25 minutes of the Rebels’ 5-2 win at San Jose State on Oct. 6. He ranks fourth in the nation in total points with 22.

Softball: Seven members of the UNLV softball team were named NFCA All-america Scholar-athlete award winners for the 2016-17 academic year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Associatio­n (NFCA) announced. Six are current Rebels - senior Brooke Stover, juniors Kiley Harrison, Jamie Hatch and Abby Howard and sophomores

Reina Bondi and Breana Burke - while the seventh is former Rebel Kylie Rasmussen.
