Pacheco, ‘Fight Doctor’ for Ali from 1962 to 1977, dies at 89

Doctor” who served as Muhammad Ali’s ringside physician, died Thursday at his Miami home after a prolonged illness. He was 89.

Pacheco met Ali in 1960 and worked as his cornerman from 1962 to 1977, including three successful title bouts. Pacheco said he left his position after suggesting Ali retire because of serious injuries. Ali fought four more matches, losing three.

Pacheco then became a television boxing analyst, as well as a painter and author.

■ Soccer: Las Vegas Lights FC agreed to a three-year deal with Lotus Broadcasti­ng and 1460 AM ESPN Deportes for the station to serve as the radio home for Spanish play-byplay broadcasts. ESPN Deportes will broadcast all Lights matches during the team’s inaugural United Soccer League season in 2018.

■ Tennis: At London, Jack Sock downed Alexander Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to advance from his round-robin group in the ATP Finals, becoming the first American to reach the final weekend at the season-ending event since Andy Roddick in 2007. Second-ranked Roger Federer went 3-0 to win the group.

■ College basketball: President Donald Trump urged suspended UCLA freshmen Liangelo Ball, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley to thank President Xi Jinping of China for their freedom after they shoplifted in China.
