Benson, owner who helped lift Saints to relevance, dies at 90

Tom Benson, the owner of the New Orleans Saints since 1985, died Thursday at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans with his wife by his side, the team said. He was 90.

Benson had been hospitaliz­ed with the flu since Feb. 16.

Benson, who also owns the NBA’S New Orleans Pelicans, helped to revive a Saints franchise that never had had a winning season at the time of his purchase.

Under his ownership, the Saints went to the postseason 11 times, earned six division titles and won the Super Bowl following the 2009 season.

Redskins: Free-agent wide receiver

Paul Richardson agreed to a five-year, $40 million deal, with $20 million guaranteed, with Washington, which also retained Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Brown with a three-year, $24 million deal.

Dolphins: Miami acquired center Daniel Kilgore and a seventh-round draft selection from San Francisco for a seventh-round pick and signed four-time Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton to a two-year deal.

Jets: Ronald Gasser, 56, convicted of manslaught­er in the 2016 road rage shooting death of former running back Joe Mcknight, was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Bengals: Tight end Tyler Eifert agreed to a one-year deal with a maximum value of $8 million with Cincinnati, which also signed punter Kevin Huber for three years.

Colts: Free-agent defensive end Denico Autry agreed to a three-year, $17.8 million deal, with $6.5 million guaranteed, with Indianapol­is.

Jaguars: Free-agent tight end Austin Seferian-jenkins agreed to a two-year, $10 million deal with Jacksonvil­le, NFL Network reported.

Patriots: New England acquired cornerback Jason Mccourty and a seventh-round draft pick from Cleveland for a sixth-round choice.

Chiefs: Punter Dustin Colquitt agreed to a three-year, $7.5 million deal, with $9 million in incentives, with Kansas City.

Ravens: Ryan Grant’s four-year, $29 million deal with Baltimore was voided after the wide receiver failed his physical.

Texans: Tight end C.J. Fiedorowic­z, 26, who sustained three concussion­s last season, announced his retirement.

Panthers: Free-agent defensive tackle Dontari Poe agreed to a three-year, $27 million deal with Carolina.

49ers: Linebacker Jerry Attaochu agreed to a one-year, $5.125 million deal with San Francisco.
