UNLV product Hawley to put NFL in past with epic journey

-

Former UNLV center Joe Hawley, who spent eight seasons in the NFL before retiring in March, is embarking on a six-month journey that he hopes will take him to the 48 contiguous states.

Hawley, 29, plans to live out of a van with his dog Freedom, a boxer mix rescue dog, while adopting a minimalist lifestyle. He sold his Mercedes-benz C300 coupe and gave most of his possessions to charity.

Hawley told ESPN he wants to free himself from “the excess” and figure out who he is away from football.

Drafted in the fourth round by Atlanta in 2010, Hawley spent five seasons with the Falcons and the past three with Tampa Bay.
