Bisping, former UFC champ, retires at 39

Former UFC middleweig­ht champion Michael Bisping said he is retiring from mixed martial arts, ESPN reported. Bisping, 39, who suffered a detached retina in 2003, attributed his retirement to worsening eye issues.

The first British champion in UFC history, Bisping went 30-9 in mixed martial arts, including a 20-9 mark in his 11 years with the UFC. His 29 fights are the most in UFC history, and his 20 wins are tied for the most.

College lacrosse: At Foxborough, Mass., Jack Tigh scored 36 seconds into the game for his first of three first-half goals, and Matt Gaudet scored four goals as Yale (17-3) notched a 13-11 win over Duke (16-4) for its first NCAA title.

Track and field: At Auckland, New Zealand, Dick Quax, who won a silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the 1976 Olympics and set a world record for that distance, died Monday after a five-year battle with throat cancer. He was 70.

Soccer: At Chester, Pa., Josh Sargent scored in his American debut, and fellow 18-year-old Tim Weah added a goal in his second internatio­nal match as the United States beat Bolivia 3-0 in an exhibition.

College baseball: Defending champion Florida (42-17), despite losses in six of its past seven games, gained the No. 1 seed for the NCAA tournament, with play starting Friday at 16 regionals.

Pro basketball: The Henderson Hawks joined the American Basketball Associatio­n as an expansion team for the 2018-19 season, which starts in November, the league said.

College basketball: Maryland forward Bruno Fernando, who averaged 10.3 points and 6.5 rebounds as a freshman in 201718, withdrew from NBA draft considerat­ion.
