Dodgers place Kershaw back on DL with lower back strain

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw returned to the disabled list Friday, this time with a strained lower back.

The three-time National League Cy Young Award winner experience­d tightness Thursday during his five-inning outing against Philadelph­ia.

An MRI examinatio­n revealed no structural damage, but manager Dave Roberts said he expects the 30-year-old left-hander to be out for at least one month.

Kershaw’s start Thursday was his first after nearly a month on the DL with left biceps tendinitis. To take Kershaw’s place on the roster, right-hander Brock Stewart was recalled from Triple-a Oklahoma City.

Blue Jays: Third baseman Josh Donaldson (tight left calf) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, shortstop Aledmys Diaz (left ankle sprain) and outfielder Randal Grichuk (right knee sprain) were activated from the DL, right-handed reliever Jake Petricka and outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. were optioned to Buffalo, and left-handed reliever Tim Mayza was recalled from the Triple-a club.

Nationals: Brian Goodwin (left wrist contusion) was activated from the disabled list, and fellow outfielder Andrew Stevenson was optioned to Triple-a Syracuse.

Tigers: First baseman Miguel Cabrera

(right hamstring strain) was activated from the disabled list, left-hander

Ryan Carpenter (right oblique strain) was placed on the 10-day DL, right-handed reliever Zac Reininger was recalled from Triple-a Toledo, and infielder

Pete Kozma was designated for assignment.

Brewers: Right-hander

Zach Davies (inflamed right rotator cuff) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and first baseman/outfielder Ji-man Choi was recalled from Triple-a Colorado Springs.

Red Sox: Right fielder Mookie Betts (left abdominal strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list. The 25-year-old leads the majors with a .359 batting average and 52 runs while hitting 17 home runs with 37 RBIS and 13 steals.

Rockies: Outfielder David Dahl (fractured right foot) was placed on the 10-day disabled list and is expected to miss six to eight weeks, and second baseman DJ Lemahieu (left thumb sprain) was activated from the DL.

Red Sox: First baseman Hanley Ramirez was released, a week after being designated for assignment, and Boston is responsibl­e for the $15.25 million remaining on his contract.

Giants: Joe Panik (torn left thumb ligament) was activated from the disabled list, and fellow second baseman Kelby Tomlinson was optioned to Triple-a Sacramento.

Indians: Center fielder Bradley Zimmer (left rib contusion) was activated from the disabled list, and right-hander Shane Bieber was optioned to Triple-a Columbus.

Orioles: Corner infielder Danny Valencia was activated from paternity leave, and lefthanded reliever Donnie Hart was optioned to Triple-a Norfolk.

Athletics: Shortstop Marcus Semien was activated from paternity leave, and middle infielder Franklin Barreto was optioned to Triple-a Nashville.

Padres: Right-hander Walker Lockett was recalled from El Paso, and right-handed reliever Kazuhisa Makita was optioned to the Triple-a club.

Mariners: Roenis Elias was recalled from Triple-a Tacoma, and fellow left-handed reliever Marc Rzepczynsk­i was designated for assignment.
