All-star closer Jansen returns to Dodgers after heart trouble

-

Los Angeles Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen was activated from the disabled list Monday after being cleared by a cardiologist, beating the initial expected timetable for his return by more than two weeks.

Jansen, 30, had been on the DL since Aug. 9, when he was hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat. He previously received treatment for heart arrythmia in 2011 and 2012.

No longer on blood thinners, Jansen said there is a “99 percent chance” he will need offseason surgery to deal with his latest issue but expects no further problems this season as long as he stays hydrated.

Jansen entered Monday with a 2.15 ERA and 32 saves in 51 games this season. In his absence, Dodgers relievers combined for a 5.17 ERA.

Braves: Right-hander Bryse Wilson’s contract was purchased from Triple-a Gwinnett, and infielder Ryan Flaherty was designated for assignment. Wilson, 20, has a 3.23 ERA over 23 starts across three minor league levels this season, with 139 strikeouts and 35 walks in 123 2/3 innings. He pitched eight one-hit shutout innings with 13 strikeouts and no walks in his most recent Gwinnett start.

Wilson, who started Monday at Pittsburgh, is the third 20-year-old pitcher to make his major league debut for Atlanta this season. Mike Soroka was 20 when he started May 1, and Koby Allard did it on July 31. Outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., also 20, was chosen as the National League Player of the Week on Monday after going 13-for-28 (.464) with four home runs in eight games.

White Sox: Manager Rick Renteria, 56, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis as a precaution after complaining of lightheadedness before Chicago’s game at Minnesota. A team official said tests didn’t show any problems. Bench coach Joe Mcewing served as the White Sox manager Monday.

Indians: Doc Edwards, a former major league catcher who managed Cleveland to a 173-207 record from 1987 to 1989, died Monday in San Angelo, Texas. He was 81. Edwards succeeded Pat Corrales as manager of the Indians, with whom he began his major league playing career in 1962. He batted .238 in five seasons.

Giants: Rookie righthander Dereck Rodriguez (right hamstring strain) will rejoin San Francisco’s rotation Friday, manager Bruce Bochy said. Also, Derek Law was recalled from Sacramento, and fellow righthanded reliever Ray Black was optioned to the Triple-a club.

Red Sox: Ace left-hander Chris Sale (left shoulder fatigue), who has yet to resume a throwing program, will not be activated from the disabled list when first eligible Saturday, manager Alex Cora said.

Orioles: Mark Trumbo (inflamed right knee) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, Adam Jones was activated from bereavement leave, and fellow outfielder John Andreoli was recalled from Triple-a Norfolk.

Mariners: Shortstop Jean Segura was activated from paternity leave, outfielder Ben Gamel was recalled from Triple-a Tacoma, and righthanded reliever Matt Festa was optioned to Double-a Arkansas.

Twins: First baseman Logan Morrison had his labrum repaired and a bone spur removed during his left hip surgery Monday and is expected to be ready for spring training.

Pirates: Steven Brault was recalled from Indianapolis, and fellow left-handed reliever Buddy Boshers was optioned to the Triple-a club.

Blue Jays: Catcher Luke Maile was activated from paternity leave, and righthander Sean Reid-foley was optioned to Triple-a Buffalo.

Mets: Outfielder Brandon Nimmo (left index finger contusion) was placed on the 10day disabled list.
