Nadal opens with easy win at Australian Open

Second-ranked Rafael Nadal opened the Australian Open by beating No. 238 James Duckworth 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 in Melbourne, the 17-time major champion’s 15th win in 17 matches against wild cards in majors.

Other winners Monday included Sloane Stephens, Maria Sharapova and Kevin Anderson. Julia Goerges, seeded 14th, was upset by Danielle Rose Collins 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

College basketball:

At Storrs, Conn., Katie Lou Samuelson became the 10th Connecticu­t women’s player to reach 2,000 points, scoring 19 in the No. 3-ranked Huskies’ 63-46 win over South Florida.

Skiing: At Adelboden, Switzerlan­d, Marcel Hirscher won a World Cup slalom to set a men’s record on the 52-year circuit for most victories by one skier at one venue. The Austrian’s ninth win at Adelboden was by 0.50 seconds over France’s Clement Noel.
