Nephew leads renaming bid to honor tennis great Ashe
Arthur Ashe Jr.’s nephew is leading a bid to rename a Richmond, Virginia, thoroughfare for the groundbreaking black tennis player.
“If we can rename the Boulevard after him, it would be a huge cultural step forward,” says Ashe’s nephew, David Harris Jr.
A proposal to rename the street, called simply “Boulevard,” for Ashe has been defeated twice since his death in 1993. A third proposal comes before the City Council for a vote Monday.
Ashe’s hometown has an athletic center named after him, along with a bronze sculpture of the U.S. Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open winner.
