Details em erge on suspect arrested in beating death

A h om eless m an accused of beating anoth er vagrant to d eath last week told a police officer h e was being jailed over “som e fool h e left leaking in th e parking lot,” accord ing to h is arrest report.

Ed d ie Lee Jackson,38,was arraigned Wed nesd ay on ch arges of open m urd er and obstruction,or provid ing a false statem ent to a police officer.

Justice of th e Peace Natalie Tyrrell continued th e $500,000 bail sh e previously h ad set for Jackson and sch ed uled a Mond ay status ch eck on th e case.

About 1 a.m . Frid ay,officers respond ed to a report of a figh t between two people in th e parking lot of Super Pawn at 1 61 1 Las Vegas Blvd . North ,th e reportsaid .

Police said th at as th ey were h ead ing to th e scene th ey saw Jackson stand ing alone on a sid ewalk near th e intersection of Hoover Street and Lake Mead Boulevard ,pacing back and forth ,flailing h is arm s and scream ing obscenities, accord ing to th e report. Th ey also saw h e was wearing an orange and yellow safety vest and d ark pants th at m atch ed a caller’s d escription of one of th e m en in th e figh t.

Jackson d id notacknowled ge com m and s to turn around and face th e officer,th en said th at h e h ated th e police and th at th ey sh ould just kill h im , th e report said .

Wh en told h e would be placed und er arrest for obstruction of a police officer for not provid ing h is inform ation, Jackson laugh ed and told th e officer, “Obstructing … m anslaugh ter … wh at about m urd er?” th e report said .

Jackson was observed to h ave d ried blood on h is cloth es,sh oes,h and s and face and bruising near h is righ t eye,and gash es on th e knuckles of h is left h and , th e report said .

Oth er officers located th e victim ,later id entified by th e Clark County coroner as 23-year-old Anth ony Giovanni Zam brotto, lying in a pool of blood at th e intersection of Main Streetand Owens Avenue.

Th e coroner’s office said Mond ay th at Zam brotto d ied at th e scene of blunt force injuries and strangulation.
