Raiders sign CB Lawson
OAKLAND, Calif. — Cornerback Nevin Lawson, who made 54 starts the past four seasons with the Detroit Lions, has signed a one-year contract with the Raiders. A person close to the situation said Lawson’s deal is worth $3.05 million.
The investment indicates the Raiders are counting on Lawson to push for significant snaps in 2019, but where he’ll fit is not entirely clear.
The position was among the team’s major concerns following free agency’s opening wave. Gareon Conley, Daryl Worley and Nick Nelson are the top returners. Versatile defensive back Lamarcus Joyner, who played free safety in recent seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, signed last week and is expected to see action at nickel cornerback.
Lawson was one of four defensive backs known to visit the team Wednesday.
Safeties George Iloka and Curtis Riley and cornerback Tyler Patmon were the others.
It’s unlikely Riley will join the Raiders, but Iloka played for Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther in Cincinnati from 2012 to 2017. He and Patmon are expected to keep in touch with the Raiders as they explore other opportunities.
Patmon would project as a special teamer. He played for Raiders special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia in Dallas from 2014 to 2015.
