Man killed, passenger hurt in suspected DUI collision
A man was killed and another was critically injured after a suspected DUI crash early Sunday in the northwest valley, according to Las Vegas police.
Metropolitan Police Department officers were called just before 2:15 a.m. Sunday to West Craig Road and North Rainbow Boulevard after a 2012 Ford Focus collided with a 2014 Ford Fusion, the department said in a statement.
The Fusion, driven by a 55-yearold man from Tehachapi, California, was southbound on Rainbow at the intersection of Craig when the Focus, driven by a 29-year-old Henderson man, ran a red light and entered the intersection westbound “at a high rate of speed,” police said.
The Focus struck the left side of the Fusion. The driver of the Fusion, as well as its sole passenger, a 54-year-old man from Laguna Niguel, California, were rushed to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The 55-year-old died at the hospital, and the passenger was in critical condition, police said.
Jayson Salzman, the driver and sole occupant of the Focus, also was taken to UMC with minor injuries. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI, police said.
The California man’s death marks the 44th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction this year, police said. four were arrested on misdemeanor charges between 6 p.m. Saturday and 4 a.m. Sunday, the Metropolitan Police Department said in a report Sunday.
No DUI arrests were made, the department wrote. Information about medical calls was not included in the report.
The second day of the music festival lasted from Saturday evening early into Sunday morning at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
On the first day of the event, police made 25 felony arrests and four misdemeanor arrests, the department announced Saturday.
