Pagenaud takes Indy 500 pole; Chevrolet nabs top three spots
Simon Pagenaud earned his first Indianapolis 500 pole with a four-lap average of 229.992 mph at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, edging three-time pole winner Ed Carpenter and Spencer Pigot.
Carpenter will start second, and Pigot, the fastest qualifier Saturday, completes the front row and a Chevrolet sweep of the top three spots.
Pagenaud, the first Frenchman to win the Indy 500 pole in 100 years, will try to become the 18th Indy 500 winner for Team Penske. Defending race winner Will Power, also a Penske driver, qualified sixth.
NHRA: At Dinwiddie, Va., Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Ron Capps (Funny Car), Bo Butner (Pro Stock), Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) and Sidnei Frigo (Pro Modified) won their disciplines in the Virginia Nationals.
