Journeyman QB Mccown, 40, retiring after 16 NFL seasons

Josh Mccown wrote in The Players’ Tribune that he is retiring after an NFL career that spanned 16 seasons and included stints with 10 teams.

He said he will help coach his two sons — also quarterbac­ks — in high school this year, and ESPN said it has hired him as an analyst.

Mccown, who turns 40 on July 4, was often considered a “bridge” quarterbac­k, and his career record as a starter was 23-53. He played the last two seasons with the New York Jets.

NBA: New Orleans exercised its option to extend coach Alvin Gentry’s contract through the 2020-21 season.

Basketball: Lamelo Ball, a 17-year-old guard expected to be one of the top picks in the 2020 NBA Draft, signed with the Illawarra Hawks for the upcoming National Basketball League season in Australia. He is the brother of Lonzo Ball, who is being traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to New Orleans as part of the Anthony Davis deal.

Golf: This year’s U.S. Open was the most watched since Fox started televising the event in 2015. Nielsen ratings show Sunday’s final round averaged 7.31 million viewers and peaked at 10.17 viewers, an increase of 44 percent over last year.

Golf: Four members of a Texas family pleaded guilty to federal charges in what prosecutor­s called a scheme that used stolen identities to obtain tickets to the Masters and resell them for a profit.

Stephen Michael Freeman agreed to serve three years in federal prison as part of a plea deal, prosecutor­s said. Freeman’s parents and a sister will avoid prison, but the family agreed to pay more than $275,000 in total restitutio­n.

Soccer: The U.S. men’s national team will open play in the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Guyana on Tuesday in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the first competitiv­e match under new coach Gregg Berhalter.

Running: 2016 Olympic marathon silver medalist Eunice Kirwa of Bahrain has been banned for four years for doping, but she will keep her medal because the race fell outside the period covered by her positive test. Gold medalist Jemima Sumgong of Kenya is serving an eight-year ban, but also retained her Olympic title.
