Ex-phillies manager back as hitting coach

The Philadelph­ia Phillies hired Charlie Manuel, the most successful manager in franchise history, to replace John Mallee as hitting coach Tuesday.

Manuel, 75, had been working as senior adviser to general manager Matt Klentak.

Manuel led the Phillies to five straight division titles, two National League pennants and the 2008 World Series championsh­ip.

Astros: Right-hander Gerrit Cole didn’t make a scheduled start Tuesday because of right hamstring discomfort.

Cardinals: Catcher Yadier Molina was activated from the injured list after missing 28 games because of a strained right thumb tendon, and outfielder Jose Martinez was placed on the IL with a shoulder injury.

Nationals: Reliever Greg Holland reached an agreement in principle to return to Washington on a minor league contract. The 33-year-old was designated for assignment by Arizona last week.

Rockies: Catcher Chris Iannetta was designated for assignment and will depart as the team’s all-time leader among catchers in games played, runs, hits, homers, RBIS and walks.

Ex-player sentenced: Doug Decinces, 68, a former third baseman for the California Angels and Baltimore, was sentenced to eight months of home detention and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine for his role in an insider-trading scheme, the Orange County Register reported. forward Kayla Thornton’s face with an open hand.

Dallas forward Kristine Anigwe was suspended two games for instigatin­g the initial altercatio­n with Griner and taking an openhanded swing at her. Thornton also was suspended two games for her role in the scuffle.

Griner said she was upset that the suspension­s were not equal and told the Arizona Republic that it could affect her future in the league. Like many women’s basketball players, she earns much more playing overseas in the offseason than in the WNBA.

Phoenix guard Diana Taurasi and Dallas forward Kaela Davis were suspended a game apiece for leaving the bench area during the altercatio­n.

Sky: Center Jantel Lavender (10 points, 6.9 rebounds per game) will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a fracture in her left foot and is likely out for the rest of the season.
