Defenseman Girardi retiring after 13 seasons, 1,954 blocks

Former New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Dan Girardi retired from the NHL after 13 seasons.

The 35-year-old appeared in 927 regularsea­son games, totaling 56 goals and 208 assists with a plus-78 rating, and helped the Rangers reach the playoffs 10 times. No player has more blocked shots than Girardi’s 1,954 since the NHL began keeping track in 2005-06.

Motor sports: At Richmond, Va., Christophe­r Bell led 238 of 250 laps en route to winning the Gobowling 250 at Richmond Raceway for his 15th victory in 68 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts and seventh this season.
