Former football aide has heart transplant

Former UNLV offensive coordinato­r Barney Cotton underwent a successful heart transplant Tuesday, coach Tony Sanchez said.

Cotton, 63, faces a long recovery. Doctors will be watching to see if his body properly accepts the new heart. The procedure took place in Omaha, Nebraska, where Cotton and his wife, Christine, have been staying with his sister.

Cotton was UNLV’S offensive coordinato­r the past four years before stepping away in July after discoverin­g he needed the transplant. He hopes to return to coaching.

In other football news, Max Gilliam took the second-team snaps in practice and likely will be UNLV’S backup quarterbac­k Saturday, Sanchez said.

Pirates: The team is parting ways with Frank Coonelly as team president after 12 seasons and replacing him with former Penguins chief operating officer Travis Williams, the Pittsburgh Tribunerev­iew reported. Williams spent 10 years with the Penguins before leaving in November to become the New York Islanders’ chief business officer.
