Clemson’s 19 new virus cases include 14 from football team
Clemson announced 19 new coronavirus cases, including 14 among football players — upping the number of confirmed COVID-19 football cases to 37, the largest known outbreak on a college football team. Clemson said it has conducted 430 tests on athletes and staff in June, with 43 positives among athletes and four from staff.
Oregon: The Ducks and Oregon State agreed to drop the name “Civil War” for their rivalry games because it “represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery,” Oregon State president Ed Ray said.
Morehouse: The historically Black college in Atlanta became the first scholarship program to cancel its football season amid COVID-19 concerns and also won’t compete in cross country. Athletic scholarships will be honored.
ACC: Commissioner John Swofford will retire after 2020-21, when the 71-year-old will have served 24 years, the longest tenure for a commissioner in league history. He was North Carolina’s athletic director for 17 years starting in 1980.
Alabama: Offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood wrote the script for and was featured in a video Thursday with several football teammates and coach Nick Saban, speaking out against racism.
Arizona State: Ukrainian basketball forward Pavlo Dziuba committed to the Sun Devils after averaging 13.8 points and 9.3 rebounds in last summer’s FIBA U16 European Championship B.
Texas Tech: Twenty-three positives were reported in 197 COVID-19 tests among football players and staff, with all but two having since recovered with no hospitalizations required.
Grand Canyon: The men’s basketball team was placed in two-week quarantine after four players and two staff members tested positive for COVID-19.
