Lake Mead draws crowd for holiday weekend start

-

If Saturday’s turnout is anything like Friday’s, visitors might face delays to get into Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Visitors on Friday flocked to the recreation area as the holiday weekend arrived. Entrances to the lake faced lines of cars Friday morning, with the Boulder City entrance backed up to U.S. Highway 93 by about noon, National Parks Service spokeswoman Christie Vanover said.

Rangers are enforcing social distancing guidelines, including asking those with tents to set up 10 feet apart from one another, Vanover said Friday.

She also noted that if beaches reach their capacity, access will be restricted until some leave the area.

A similar, if not larger, turnout is expected for the Fourth of July, and Vanover noted that the lake usually sees 50,000 to 200,000 visitors for the holiday.

“It’s going to be busy out here,” Vanover said. “We ask that people who come out here recreate responsibly and pick up their trash in addition to social distancing.”

Police also found another knife and a hammer in the bedroom next to the couple. Investigators believe the attack was an attempted murder-suicide, according to the arrest report.

Dennis Hughes was booked on one count of open murder and is expected to appear in court Monday.

As police talked to the woman, Dunlap arrived.

“Dunlap identified himself via verbal,” police said. “Officers conducted a record check on Dunlap where multiple outstanding warrants appeared listed.”

No details were available on the specific accusations against Dunlap from the 2011 warrant.

Justice Court records indicate Dunlap is out of custody, and a warrant return hearing was scheduled.
