Clark County records 836 new COVID-19 cases
Number hospitalized up throughout state
Clark County recorded 836 new cases of COVID-19 and 11 additional deaths over the preceding day, according to data from the Southern Nevada Health District posted Tuesday.
The health district posted the new figures on its coronavirus website, pushing the county case total to 19,654 and the death toll to 450.
The district estimates that 11,866 of patients have recovered.
New cases were well above the daily average of slightly over 596 for the preceding week and the fatalities were also well above the daily average of just over 3½ for the period.
The health district also reported 37 additional hospitalizations over the preceding day, more than double the daily average of just over 17 for the preceding week.
The Nevada Hospital Association reported that the jump in Clark County was mirrored in the state numbers, which experienced “the largest single day increase in hospitalized patients. … Moving averages of hospitalized and confirmed patients continue to increase.”
The report said Southern Nevada hospitals remain below capacity, with 74 percent of available hospital beds and 85 percent of beds in intensive care units occupied. The association noted additional beds can be made available if hospitals activate “surge plans.”
Meanwhile, the state Department of Health and Human Services reported 876 new cases of COVID-19 and no additional deaths over the preceding day, according to data posted Tuesday.
The new figures, posted on the state’s nvhealthresponse.nv.gov website, pushed the case total for the state to 23,785 and left the death toll unchanged at 537.
New cases were above the daily average of just over 716 for the preceding week, while deaths were below the daily average of nearly five over the period.
The state’s infection rate, considered a better indicator of the trend of the outbreak than new cases and deaths, registered its 20th straight daily increase to 7.55 percent.
The rate, the number of confirmed cases divided by the number of people tested, bottomed out on June 17 after falling for more than two months and has steadily increased since.
Both the health district and state redistribute cases and deaths after they are announced to better reflect the onset of symptoms or the date of death, so the figures announced daily often don’t match the revised totals used in the detailed breakdowns they provide.
Neither agency provides identifying information on COVID-19 patients or the deceased, so it impossible to know how or where they were infected or anything else about their cases.
In other developments:
Nevada State College reported that an individual at the school’s nursing skills lab at 1001 Shadow Lane in Las Vegas has tested positive for COVID-19. The college posted on Twitter late Monday that the individual was last at the facility on June 25 and tested positive for the virus on Saturday. The person was said to be isolated and receiving care.
Nye County reported 33 new cases on Tuesday for a total of 164 positive cases of COVID-19. Twenty-five of the new cases are inmates in the Nye County Sheriff ’s Office Detention Center. Detention Center cases account for 30 of the Pahrump cases overall.
