Pitcher: Blue Jays seeking MLB park for home games

The Blue Jays’ front office is working to find a major league ballpark for the team to use after Canada’s government barred Toronto from playing in its home stadium amid the COVID-19 crisis, reliever Anthony Bass said, adding players are willing to share a home venue with another team, among other sacrifices.

In other Blue Jays news, All-star left-hander Hyun-jin Ryu was chosen to make his second straight openingday start and first with Toronto. The 33-year-old went 14-5 with a majorsbest 2.32 ERA in 29 starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019.

Athletics: Manager Bob Melvin picked right-hander Frankie Montas to start Friday, making the 27-year-old Dominican Oakland’s second foreignbor­n opening-day starter and first since Cuban Ariel Prieto in 1997. Montas went 9-2witha2.63eraover1­6startsin 2019, when he also served an 80-game PED suspension.

Rays: Manager Kevin Cash picked two-time All-star right-hander Charlie Morton to make his first opening-day start. The 36-year-old went 16-6 with a 3.05 ERA in a career-high 33 starts in 2019, when he finished third in AL Cy Young Award voting.

Diamondbac­ks: Four-time All-star left-hander Madison Bumgarner was picked by manager Torey Lovullo to make his sixth opening-day start and first with Arizona. The 30-year-old went 9-9 with a 3.90 ERA over 34 starts in 2019.

Pirates: Catcher Luke Maile is expected to miss at least 10 to 12 weeks after having surgery Friday to repair a right index finger fractured Thursday when the 29-year-old was hit by a pitch in an intrasquad game.

White Sox: Manager Rick Renteria chose All-star right-hander Lucas Giolito to start on opening day. The 26-yearold went 14-9 with a 3.41 ERA and

228 strikeouts in 176⅔ innings over 29 starts in 2019.

Tigers: Manager Ron Gardenhire picked left-hander Matthew Boyd to start on opening day. The 29-year-old went 9-12 with a 4.56 ERA and 238 strikeouts in 185⅓ innings over 32 starts in 2019.

Red Sox: Right-hander Collin Mchugh, 33, opted out of the season and will forgo his prorated salary because his arm hasn’t recovered as well as he’d hoped after a December elbow procedure.
