Plesac sent home for violating safety rules

-

Cleveland sent home righthander Zach Plesac after he violated team COVID-19 safety rules by leaving the hotel to go out Saturday in Chicago.

The Athletic first reported the news on Plesac, who will be quarantined for 72 hours. The 25-year-old drove back to Cleveland in a rental car, ESPN reported.

Plesac pitched six innings Saturday in the Indians’ 7-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. He is 1-1 this season with a 1.29 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 21 innings.

Cleveland has been stringent with safety protocols. In summer camp, outfielder Franmil Reyes was ordered to stay away from the team after he was seen at a party without a mask.

■ Rays: Two-time All-star right-hander Charlie Morton (inflamed right shoulder) exited his start in the third inning. Also, right-handed reliever Oliver Drake (right biceps tendinitis) was placed on the 10-day IL, and center fielder Manuel Margot was activated from the COVID-19 IL.

■ Cardinals: St. Louis’ threegame set with Pittsburgh, slated to start Monday, was postponed as the Cardinals deal with a COVID-19 outbreak. Nine playes and seven staffers tested positive since last week.

■ Yankees: Four-time AllStar outfielder Giancarlo Stanton (left hamstring strain) was placed on the 10-day injured list. The 30-year-old is batting .293 with three home runs and seven RBIS through 14 games.

■ Pirates: Corner infielder Phillip Evans was placed on the 45-day IL and ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken jaw and concussion sustained Saturday in a collision with right fielder Gregory Polanco.

■ Orioles: Right-hander Jorge Lopez was claimed off waivers from Kansas City. The 27-yearold has a 5.97 ERA in 190 innings over parts of five major league seasons.

■ Royals: Outfielder Franchy Cordero (right wrist sprain) was placed on the 10-day IL, corner infielder/outfielder Hunter Dozier was activated from the COVID-19 IL.

■ Reds: Second baseman Mike Moustakas (left quadriceps contusion), a three-time All-star, was placed on the 10day IL, retroactive to Thursday.

■ Tigers: Center fielder Jacoby Jones (tight left abdomen), batting .333 this season, exited in the third inning of Detroit’s game at Pittsburgh.
