Dec. 22 targeted for start of 72-game year; Finals in June

The NBA’S board of governors is considerin­g a December start to the 2020-21 season, with Dec. 22 being the initial opening target date and the season being trimmed to 72 games. That scenario would have the Finals in their normal June slot. No decisions have been finalized, and talks with the players union remain ongoing on many matters, including financial parameters.

■ Nets: Former six-time All-star forward Amare Stoudemire was hired as an assistant coach, with a focus on player developmen­t.

The 37-year-old spent eight of his 14 NBA seasons with Phoenix, where he played six years with new Brooklyn coach Steve Nash. Neither has been a full-time coach at any level.

■ Bulls: Former security guard John

Capps’ six championsh­ip rings from the team’s 1990s dynasty sold at auction this week for a combined $255,840. Capps worked for the organizati­on for 52 years and died in 2018 at age 88. Profits reportedly will be dispersed among Capps’ 11 heirs.
