No. 10 BYU matches best start since 2008
Zach Wilson threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns Saturday to lead No. 10 Brigham Young past Texas State 49-14. Fourteen players caught a pass for the Cougars (6-0), and 11 had at least one carry as they amassed 579 yards of offense and 30 first downs while matching their best start since 2008. The Bobcats (1-6) totaled 267 yards of offense and fell to 0-9 against ranked teams.
■ Wisconsin: Quarterback Graham Mertz tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported, and will take a followup test to confirm the result.
The redshirt freshman was 20 of 21 passing for 248 yards and five touchdowns in his first start Friday in the No. 9 Badgers’ win over Illinois.
■ Big Ten: The league will determine whether to cancel games this year based on COVID-19 testing positivity rates within a team, and if a game can’t be played, it will be deemed a “no contest.” Each team must play at least six of eight scheduled games to qualify for the league title game.
■ South Carolina: The NCAA approved transfer wide receiver Jalen Brooks to play immediately. The junior from Harrisburg, North Carolina, had 52 catches for
1,048 yards and 10 TDS in two seasons at Wingate, an NCAA Division II program.
■ Michigan: Former Louisiana Tech offensive tackle Willie
Allen joined the Wolverines as a graduate transfer. He entered the NCAA’S transfer portal last week after missing two games because of Covid-19-related issues.
■ Virginia: The NCAA granted Indiana transfer running back Ronnie Walker Jr. immediate eligibility, with two years remaining. He appeared in 22 games for the Hoosiers in 2018 and 2019.
